F is for Fashion

I was asked to draw an illustration for a new magazine called Antigone. The topic was fashion and disability. This is a prime example of a project that opens my eyes. I had never considered fashion for someone missing a limb. Why would you make clothing with a gaping hole on one side for someone? It really made me think about disability, fashion, symmetry and balance.

Fount mag

Why create: for unforeseen pleasure

A collaborative project by Fount Magazine caught my eye and I just got so curious. In Round 1 artists responded to the question 'how do we ignore the fear of failure to make something new'. I love the positivity in this question rather than how does it feel to procrastinate, what does it feel like to not do. 

In Round 2 different artists (I was one!) responded to the images created in Round 1. I was given a photo of a 3D modelled skate park. To me the artist has answered the question by saying that the unknown pleasure that can come from taking a risk and getting involved in the creative process is the reason why we make. 

I decided to do a large mega fun park area to expand and develop this metaphor. I was keen to test my traditional stipple and ink line drawing on modern subjects like skate park jumps and slides. I really enjoyed the process and for me it was the pure joy of creating. Thanks Fount Magazine!

Catching Katsina dolls

Sunday morning sketching felt so good and I discovered Katsina dolls from Mexico in the local Horniman Museum in Forest Hill – super character design inspiration. Last time I saw these was drawing at Pictoplasma 2014 in the ethnological museum in Berlin.

Picene people

Today was about a rough draft for a book about the Picene people. Apparently they are so named because of their association with, or beliefs about, woodpeckers (Picidae) and the God Mars. I also started a relief drawing for another book, showing an ancient marriage ceremony. The below is my first idea for the cover.

Hester's beautiful craft

Flying Merguez, street art style

I got to paint Flying Merguez outside at Urban Spree, amazing, one on the life time achievement list (never did learn Italian, but Russian was a nice surprise)

Sticker Mag – Klebstoff

So as a group, the Pictoplasma Alumni are preparing a sticker magazine that will be printed by KlebStoff in Berlin, www.stickermag.com. Here are my final Flying Merguez pages! Next stop the risograph zine, pulling out all the stops to get ready for the exhibition in April.

Merguez merch

Every celebrity needs quality merch, so I've been working on my Flying Merguez goodies, 20-page blank notebooks with different cover design options and vinyl stickers, to accompany Merguez at his exhibition in April, Berlin. Hopefully, we'll have our Pictoplasma 2014 sticker book there too!

OOMK launch issue #3

My Anxiety project features in the third issue of OOMK, November 2014, very excited to be included with some great artists and writers. They also had a couple of illustrations in an exhibition at the launch.

MA Wrap Up

All the hard work is paying off and the project is starting to get out there. Mind Charity shared on their tumblr and in their e-news to 3000 members, and next week to Wales. The Mental Health Foundation are also keen to use the images.

The MA exhibition was fantastic at Hoxton Gallery, Shoreditch, 4–8 September 2014. I was so nervous before, but from the moment the private view started until the end, I loved it. The Crowd Talks on the sunday were brilliant too.

Anxiety project

And the business card, which I gave to the director of the Anxiety Arts Festival, networking is not really my forte. I guess it's a process of learning. Just fewer of the recorded and filmed round table discussions please, oh please.

Park n Hands

The weather has been lovely and I sat in the park at Honor Oak last weekend. I can't believe the council were considering adding it to the existing cemetery land either side of it, no disrespect to the dead or anything, but come on to deny the living...tsk. There are basketball and tennis courts too.

Some statue hands at the V&A, tricky. But today I was in the flow it felt great. I invited some friends to draw and in the end 5 of us went. The ultimate for me friends, drawing, foodage and tea.
